3 Tips for Successful Family Photos

Here are 3 tips to successful family photos, because all of us moms need as much help as we can get. Even though I only photograph newborns now, I have photographed my share of kids and families throughout the years. I sat down with with my friend and professional photographer, Jen Wright, and we came up with some tips and shopping suggestions.

1. Do NOT match your clothes, just coordinate the colors. The biggest mistake is being too matchy matchy. It’s best to pick one item and then build around it. For example: In the shoot above, I found my dress and then found things for each girl to coordinate. (I had a gray half zip for my husband in the pics above, but it was WAY too hot for that!)

Don’t Forget:

-Don’t overlook your kids shoes, bulky athletic sneakers are no bueno.

-Boys always look good with layers. For example, a cardigan over a striped t-shirt. It just adds a little something extra.

-Steer clear of wearing all white or all black.

2. Parents – Please figure out a way to not let the session stress you out.  It’s SO important to come to the session without threatening your children about their behavior and barking orders.  Let your children be themselves and give the photographer room to do her/his job. The goal is to capture your children being themselves.

3. Lighting is one of the most important aspects of the session.  Parents can sometimes get bent out of shape because the shoot time will interfere with bed time.  We are only talking about one night and images you are going to cherish forever; so put them down for a later nap, feed them an early dinner and go with the flow.

If you live in Atlanta, my fabulous friend Jen is the best family photographer there is.  She still has some Fall spots open if you need to reserve a session.  She photographed my family in the images above and I treasure them. To get more info, please email her at jen@jen-wright.com. If you are out of state, she LOVES to travel 😉 Once she photographs our 2017 session I’ll share a little peek of that with you too.  I’ll definitely be using some of the shopping links below for my girls.

Do you mind telling me where you purchased your dress for the family photo shoot? My family photo shoot is coming up and it will also be a Fall outdoor shoot.
    Thank you. Beautiful pictures!
