Portugal has been on my list for years — the tiles, the coastline, the wine country, the quiet elegance. But if I’m doing Portugal, I’m doing it beautifully. No chaotic train schedules. No dragging luggage uphill on cobblestones. Just thoughtful pacing, gorgeous hotels, private transfers when needed, and time to actually enjoy where we are.
This is Portugal the J.Cathell way.
Seven days. Three regions. Two hotel moves. And a proper seaside exhale at the end.
Days 1–3: Lisbon — Polished, Historic, Effortlessly Cool
We begin in Lisbon — a city that feels layered, romantic, and quietly vibrant.
Base yourself somewhere refined and central like the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon or the charming Santiago de Alfama Boutique Hotel. Arrange airport pickup through the hotel so you land and immediately settle in.
Spend your first afternoon wandering Alfama’s winding streets, stopping for espresso, and watching the light shift across the tiled facades. Lisbon is hilly and full of cobblestones, so comfortable (but chic) footwear is essential.
One day is dedicated to a private driver experience to Sintra — visiting Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira — then continuing on to Cascais for a coastal lunch before returning to Lisbon. It’s seamless, elevated, and eliminates the need for navigating public transport.
Your final Lisbon day is slower: Chiado shopping, a river cruise, or simply enjoying your hotel’s terrace.
This portion of the trip is about architecture, culture, and polished exploration.
Days 4–5: Porto & The Douro — Old World Meets Wine Country
From Lisbon, take a short flight or arrange a private transfer north to Porto.
Check into The Yeatman, where the infinity pool overlooks the Douro River and the entire city feels cinematic. Porto is moodier than Lisbon — more intimate, more textural.
Explore the Ribeira district, enjoy a private port tasting, and take in sunset views over the river.
One day is reserved for the Douro Valley. Arrange a private wine driver for vineyard tours, a seated tasting, and a long lunch overlooking the terraces. Add a river cruise if you want to lean into the romance.
This portion of the trip is about texture, depth, and slowing the pace slightly.
Days 6–7: Algarve — A Proper Seaside Reset
From Porto, fly to Faro and transfer privately to your final stop: Vila Vita Parc.
This is not a “find a beach and hope for a chair” situation. This is cliffside elegance with ocean access, beautiful pools, loungers, and thoughtful service.
Spend two full days doing very little:
Swim in the Atlantic.
Move to the pool.
Order lunch to your chair.
Read. Rest. Reset.
Ending the trip here makes the entire week feel intentional rather than rushed.
Why This Works
This itinerary blends:
• Culture in Lisbon
• Romance in Sintra
• Wine country in the Douro
• Coastal elegance in the Algarve
With only two main hotel changes and minimal public transport, it feels luxurious without being excessive — curated, not chaotic.
Portugal is layered and beautiful. The key is pacing it well.
And this is exactly how I would do it.
