Kentucky Derby: Hats, Horses and Haute Couture

Apr 7

The Kentucky Derby holds a very special place in my heart. I went to college in Kentucky, and any chance I get to go back and soak up everything the Bluegrass State has to offer, I take it — and this year I am actually going to the Derby, and I could not be more excited. There is truly nothing like it.

Churchill Downs on Derby Day is one of the most electric, joyful, and downright beautiful scenes you will ever witness. The energy is unmatched, the tradition runs deep, and the fashion? It is absolutely everything.

Dress to Be Seen

The Kentucky Derby has one of the most beloved dress codes in all of sport and social life. It is one of the rare occasions where going over the top is not only accepted — it is celebrated. Think sweeping midi and maxi dresses, beautiful prints, rich jewel tones, soft pastels, and silhouettes that feel both polished and festive. From a show-stopping emerald green floral gown to the softest powder blue, blush pink, lavender, and cream — color is your best friend at the Derby.

The Hat Is Everything

If you take nothing else away from this post, take this: wear a hat. A great Derby hat is a whole moment in itself. Wide brims, sculptural shapes, fresh flowers, feathers, and bold embellishments are all completely on theme. And if a full hat feels like a lot, a beautifully placed fascinator is equally chic and just as Derby-appropriate. Either way, what you put on your head is just as important as what you put on your body — own it.

The Looks

I had so much fun designing 11 Derby looks this year — and scrolling through them honestly makes me even more excited for race day. Whether you are heading to Churchill Downs, attending a Derby party, or just looking for the perfect spring occasion dress, these looks cover every style from soft and romantic to bold and dramatic. Every piece is linked so you can shop the full look — hats, fascinators, bags, shoes, and all the little extras that make a Derby outfit truly complete.

This is one of my favorite round-ups I have ever put together. I hope it inspires you to get dressed up, have a little fun with fashion, and maybe even raise a mint julep while you’re at it.
