The Amalfi Coast: A 7-Day Luxury Itinerary for Couples

Apr 18

A note before we begin.

I have been to the Amalfi Coast before — and I think about that trip constantly. It was for my 40th birthday, and even with everything that went sideways, it remains one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life. I did it with my husband, and if you know him at all, you know he is not easily impressed by hotels. Belmond Hotel Caruso changed that completely. The room was incredible. The bathroom was stunning. And that terrace overlooking the water — I close my eyes and I am still there. Ravello was genuinely perfect. The weather was beautiful, the village was everything, and those two days were exactly what we needed.

And then the rest of the trip had other plans.

The weather turned — on and off rain for most of the coast portion — which meant our private boat days, the ones I had been dreaming about, simply did not happen. And then, because the universe apparently had one more thing to throw at us, my husband got a vomiting virus for two days. The man has had that maybe twice in his entire life. On our 40th birthday trip to Italy. Truly unbelievable.

Here is the thing though: even with all of that, the bones of this trip were extraordinary. Our original itinerary was very much in line with everything I am recommending here — the private transfers, the exclusive experiences, the best hotels. That is just the way we travel and it is genuinely the best way to experience a place like this. We just never got to fully execute it.

Which is exactly why a redo is on my list. I don’t have this trip on the calendar just yet — but it is one I am genuinely so excited to plan, and honestly one I think would be absolutely incredible to do with another couple or two. The group dinners. The private boat days we are actually going to take this time. The aperitivo rituals at golden hour. If this trip has been sitting on your dream list, I hope this itinerary is the thing that finally makes you book it. I really do think you would love it. Every single bit of it.

Days 1 & 2 — Just the Two of You: Ravello

The most romantic village on the entire coast

Naples Airport → Ravello

Private car transfer — approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on coastal traffic. Mercedes S-Class or Sprinter depending on group size. The drive up the coast is part of the experience — your driver will know every overlook.

Where to Stay

 Belmond Hotel Caruso

An 11th century palazzo perched 350 meters above the sea with an infinity pool that looks like it pours directly into the Mediterranean. Only 50 rooms. Impeccable service. The most romantic hotel on the entire coast — and it is not close.

What to Do + Where to Eat

Settle In

Day 1:

  • Private welcome aperitivo on your terrace as the sun sets over the water — arrange this with the concierge before arrival
  • Dinner at the Belmond’s own restaurant — request the outdoor terrace table and let the kitchen send out what they’re proud of that evening. Trust them completely.
  • Early to bed — big week ahead

Day 2:

 Explore, Choose, Boat, Dine

  • Wake up slowly. Coffee and pastries on your terrace as the coast comes alive below you — this is the morning you realize Italy is different.
  • Morning village stroll through Ravello — the main piazza, the Duomo, the little ceramic studios and local shops. Buy something here. It’s a ritual. Plan about an hour to an hour and a half.

Then choose how to spend your late morning:

Option A — The Experience: Private guided visit to the Gardens of Villa Cimbrone with early access before the crowds arrive. The Terrace of Infinity is one of the great views in Europe and worth every minute.

Option B — The Slow Option: Return to the hotel, settle into a lounger by that infinity pool, and do absolutely nothing. Sometimes the most luxurious thing you can do in Italy is exactly that.

  • Afternoon private boat charter for two — your own captain, your own itinerary, chilled Champagne, fresh fruit, swim stops wherever you want, no agenda
  • Dinner at Rossellinis — Michelin starred, intimate, and one of the finest meals you will have on the entire trip. Let the sommelier pair the wine. Linger as long as possible.

Day 3 — Transition Day: Drive the Coast + Positano

Where the group comes together

Ravello → Positano: Private car transfer — approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour along the SS163. Ask your driver to stop at the Vallone di Furore and the viewpoint above Positano before you descend.

What to Do + Where to Stay + Where to Eat

Stay: Le Sirenuse, Positano

There is no more iconic address on the Amalfi Coast. A former aristocratic villa converted into the most glamorous hotel on the water. Request the Superior Sea View rooms or Junior Suites — the terraces are everything.

  • Check in as a group, settle in, let everyone find their rooms
  • Welcome group aperitivo on the Le Sirenuse rooftop terrace — Champagne, local cheese, the best view in Positano. This becomes the non-negotiable daily ritual everyone looks forward to.
  • First group dinner at La Sponda — Le Sirenuse’s legendary candlelit dining room where every table is surrounded by hundreds of candles and the menu is deeply, beautifully Italian. This is the dinner that sets the tone for the whole trip.

Day 4: Capri Day

The jewel of the trip

Positano → Capri: Private boat from Positano harbor — approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. No ferry terminals, no crowds. Arrive into Capri in style.

What to Do + Where to Eat + Where to Shop

  • Funicular up to Capri town — coffee and people watching at the Piazzetta is non-negotiable
  • Private shopping experience on Via Camerelle — arrange a private appointment at Loro Piana or one of the major Italian houses for an exclusive browsing experience before the crowds arrive
  • Lunch at Da Paolino — under the lemon grove, long and unhurried. The burrata, the fresh pasta, the local white wine. Reserve well in advance and request the best table under the trees.
  • Private boat tour around the island — Blue Grotto with exclusive early access if conditions allow, Faraglioni rocks, hidden grottos, the best swimming spots the captain knows
  • Sunset Champagne anchored off the Faraglioni before the return to Positano
  • Light casual group dinner back in Positano — somewhere the concierge loves, not somewhere in the guidebook

Day 5 – Amalfi Town + Beach Club

The perfect balance of exploring and indulging

Positano → Amalfi Town: Private boat — approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Arriving by water is the only acceptable way.

What to Do + Where to Shop + Where to Eat

  • Morning exploring the Duomo di Amalfi and the back streets — ceramics, leather sandals made to order, Amalfi paper goods, and the best limoncello you will find anywhere
  • Exclusive beach club afternoon — private cabana, full lunch service, the entire afternoon in the sun. Ask your concierge for the best private club experience that season.
  • Return to Positano by private boat
  • Group aperitivo ritual on the Le Sirenuse rooftop — golden hour, Champagne, every single evening
  • Dinner at a local trattoria in the back streets of Positano — somewhere with no English menu and the best handmade pasta you have ever had

Day 6 – Full Private Yacht Day

The day of the entire trip

Charter the finest private yacht available — a proper sailing yacht or high-end motor vessel, full crew, full catering. This is worth every single penny and everyone will talk about it for years.

  • Depart Positano harbor at 9am with Champagne and fresh pastries waiting on board
  • First swim stop at a hidden cove accessible only by boat — your captain will know exactly where
  • Anchor off Li Galli — the private island archipelago once owned by Rudolf Nureyev. Swimming here is an experience unlike anything else on the coast.
  • On-board catered lunch — fresh local seafood, burrata, chilled white wine, fresh fruit. Lunch on a private yacht anchored in the Tyrrhenian Sea is the image of the entire trip.
  • Afternoon stop at Praiano for a quick explore — one of the most overlooked and beautiful villages on the coast
  • Sunset Champagne on the water before returning to Positano
  • Final group dinner at Zass at Il San Pietro di Positano — one of the most celebrated restaurants on the coast. Order the tasting menu. Dress beautifully. Linger as long as they will let you.

Day 7 – Slow Morning + Depart

Leave gracefully

  • One final sunrise — sit outside with coffee as the village wakes up. This is the goodbye Positano deserves.
  • Final breakfast on the Le Sirenuse terrace — order everything, take your time, let it all sink in
  • One last walk down to the black sand beach before the crowds arrive
  • Last minute limoncello and ceramics for anyone who needs gifts for home

The Amalfi Coast is one of those places that gets under your skin and stays there.

I know because it happened to me. Plan this trip. You will think about it for the rest of your life.
