How to Zhuzh Up the Outfit the J.Cathell Way

May 7

Your closet has the ingredients. Let me help you find the recipe.

There is a moment most of us have at some point in our closet — usually around 7:42am, usually with somewhere to be by 8:00 — where we pull on the white button-up and the jeans and the sandals we have worn a hundred times, and we look in the mirror and think, okay, this is fine.

Fine.

The whole word makes me twitch a little.

Because here is the thing I have come to believe after years of getting dressed and styling outfits and watching what makes a look go from forgettable to that woman looks incredible: most of us already have the ingredients. We own the white button-up. We own the jeans. We own the red dress and the blue sundress and the white pants and the swimsuit. The building blocks are right there. Where it tends to fall apart is in the recipe.

We default to the safe accessories. The expected bag. The shoe we have worn a hundred times. The everyday studs. We put together an outfit that technically works, but it ends up reading basic when it could be reading expensive. And the difference between those two things is almost never the clothes themselves. It is the styling. It is the recipe.

So today I want to walk you through six of those moments. Six everyday outfits I see most of us reach for, styled twice — once the way most of us would default to (the “Before”), and once the J.Cathell way (the “After”). Same ingredients. Better recipe. A bag, a shoe, an earring, a pop of color, a textured belt, a printed sarong — small upgrades that take fine and turn it into something that feels considered.
