The Ultimate Lake Como Guide: What to Wear, Where to Stay, Best Restaurants & Things to Do

Jun 13

There are certain destinations that feel almost impossibly beautiful in photographs—and then somehow exceed every expectation once you arrive. Lake Como is one of those places.

Set against a backdrop of dramatic mountains and shimmering blue water, the lake has long been synonymous with old-world glamour, attracting everyone from European aristocracy to Hollywood icons. But what makes Lake Como so special isn’t just its luxury hotels or legendary villas. It’s the pace. The long lunches that stretch into the afternoon. The quiet boat rides between villages. The evenings spent lingering over aperitivo as the sun slips behind the mountains.

For this guide, I pulled together everything I would want to know before planning a trip—from the most iconic hotels and exciting new openings to the villages worth exploring, the restaurants worth booking well in advance, and the experiences that define a true Lake Como escape. Along the way, I’ve also included plenty of outfit inspiration because let’s be honest—few places inspire a vacation wardrobe quite like Lake Como.

Think linen dresses fluttering in the breeze, raffia bags tucked beside boat seats, oversized sunglasses, elegant swimwear, and pieces that feel polished without ever appearing overdone. The entire destination embodies a kind of effortless luxury that never feels forced.

Whether you’re planning your first visit or dreaming about your next European summer, consider this your guide to experiencing Lake Como the way it was meant to be enjoyed: slowly, beautifully, and with an Aperol Spritz never too far from reach.

Where to Stay

The Icons

Passalacqua  #1 World’s 50 Best Hotels

Moltrasio

The most coveted address on the lake. Only 24 suites across three buildings near the waterfront. Intimate, achingly beautiful, and nearly impossible to book. This is the pinnacle of Lake Como — pure dolce far niente.

Villa d’Este  Grande Dame

Cernobbio

The OG luxury hotel. Regal interiors, private boats, Michelin-starred dining at Mistral, and a floating pool directly on the lake. Pure old-world glamour — the benchmark everyone else is measured against.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo  Opened 1910

Tremezzo — opposite Bellagio

Art Nouveau architecture, stunning views directly across to Bellagio, and one of the best sunset dinner terraces on the lake. La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi is a must-book.

Mandarin Oriental  Most Romantic

Between Blevio & Torno

More secluded and modern. Famous for its subterranean spa carved into the rock and a floating pool. Best for couples and honeymooners who want privacy over scene.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni  Only 5-star in Bellagio

Bellagio

Family-run since 1918, white-gloved service, live jazz every evening. The only five-star hotel actually in Bellagio — classic and timeless, with 95 rooms in antique Italian style.

New Openings

The Lake Como EDITION  NEW — Open March 2026

Cadenabbia — opposite Bellagio

The buzziest opening of the year. 147 rooms, a floating pool, and Cetino — the signature restaurant by 3-Michelin-starred chef Mauro Colagreco, focused on circular gastronomy.

The Ritz-Carlton Bellagio  NEW — Opening 2026

Bellagio

Restoring the iconic 19th-century Hotel Grande Bretagne in the heart of Bellagio. Historic bones, Ritz-Carlton service. One of the most anticipated luxury openings in Europe this year.

Palazzo Venezia  NEW — Opened late 2025

Como waterfront

Quietly reopened as a refined five-star on Como’s most prestigious waterfront stretch.

Mama Shelter Lake Como  NEW — Mid-2026

Como City

The most design-forward, social option on the lake. Part of the Ennismore portfolio. Vibrant interiors, social dining, younger energy.

What to Do

On the Water

  • Private boat hire – rent by the hour, stop at villages along the way. This is the move.
  • Ferry hopping  – Ferry hop between Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio — cheap, scenic, and very local.
  • Sunset cruise  –  with aperitivo — combine a lake cruise with drinks for the best panorama.

Village Hopping

  • Bellagio — the crown jewel. Cobblestone streets, lakefront cafes, postcard views from every corner.
  • Varenna — quieter, more romantic, less touristy. Perfect for a slow morning.
  • Menaggio — calmer energy on busy weekends, great for a relaxed lunch.
  • Como City  — take the funicular up to Brunate for panoramic views over the lake.

Culture & Gardens

  • Villa del Balbianello — the most famous villa on the lake (James Bond, Star Wars). Book ahead.
  • Villa Carlotta  — stunning botanical gardens + art. Spring is peak season.
  • Villa d’Este grounds  — even if you’re not staying, visit for the gardens and the pool terrace.
  • Brunate funicular  — short ride, extraordinary views.

Where to Eat

Fine Dining

Mistral at Villa d’Este

Michelin-starred, terrace dining, books out 90 days in advance. Prime west-terrace tables in July and August clear in five days. Reserve the moment you plan your dates.

Cetino at The Lake Como EDITION

Brand new in 2026. Chef Mauro Colagreco’s circular gastronomy concept — hyper-seasonal, ingredient-led, and unlike anywhere else on the lake. This is the table everyone will be talking about.

La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi — Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Elevated set menus honoring the late Gualtiero Marchesi, one of Italy’s most influential chefs. Sunset dinner on the terrace is unmissable — arrive 20 minutes before the sun drops.

Sottovoce

Contemporary feel with a la carte and tasting menus (3, 6 or 10 dishes). Exceptional wine pairings and arguably the most beautiful lake view of any restaurant.

Casual & Local

  • Waterfront restaurants in Varenna — the most romantic lunch setting on the lake
  •  Como city — traditional spots serving risotto con pesce persico (lake perch with polenta). This is the dish to order.
  • Aperitivo along the Como promenade — the local evening ritual.
  •  Missoltini dried shad, a local specialty. Order it if you see it.
