The Ultimate Bar Harbor, Maine Travel Guide: Where to Stay, Eat & Explore in Acadia

There is a version of New England fall that lives in Vermont — all covered bridges and pumpkin patches — and then there is Bar Harbor, Maine, where the leaves meet the Atlantic and the whole town feels magical this time of year. My husband and I went years ago on a couples trip, and it remains one of my favorite trips we have ever taken together.

We hiked through Acadia National Park, though our particular fall ran warm and the color was delayed, so the trees were still mostly green while we were there — proof that the trails and the coastline are worth it even without peak foliage. We also chartered a small scenic flight over the coastline, which gave us the most incredible view of the islands and the harbor from above, and spent our evenings unwinding with rooftop drinks looking out over the water.

I have not been back in almost ten years, so I have been browsing hotels, inns, and restaurants online to see what is worth considering for a return trip. Sharing what caught my eye below — take a look and see if any of these feel like a good fit for your own trip.

West Street Hotel — the boutique waterfront pick, right on Frenchman Bay with rooftop views and walking distance to downtown.

Bar Harbor Inn & Spa — the classic, historic choice — oceanfront, full spa, and fine dining at the Reading Room. Comes up again and again as the top luxury pick in town.

Harborside Hotel, Spa & Marina — resort-style, also on the water, with a spa and marina setting that leans a little more polished-and-private.

Terrace Grille at Bar Harbor Inn — more casual, but the Frenchman Bay views are hard to beat

Balance Rock Inn — Best Boutique Stay — An intimate Gilded Age–era inn with just 27 rooms, waterfront grounds, a heated pool, and old-world New England charm, perfect for a romantic getaway or girls’ trip.

What to Do

Spend a Day in Acadia National Park — Drive the scenic Park Loop Road and stop at highlights like Jordan Pond, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, and Cadillac Mountain.
Walk Jordan Pond Path — An approachable, scenic loop with mountain and water views, followed by tea and popovers at Jordan Pond House.
Visit Cadillac Mountain — One of Acadia’s most iconic viewpoints, especially beautiful at sunrise or during fall foliage season.
Bike or Walk the Carriage Roads — Explore Acadia’s historic car-free carriage roads for a relaxed way to take in the scenery without a strenuous hike.
Take a Scenic Flight Over Acadia — See Mount Desert Island, Cadillac Mountain, lighthouses, harbors, and the Maine coastline from above for an unforgettable fall experience. Seeing Mount Desert Island and Acadia from above is one of those experiences that completely changes your perspective on the destination. In the fall, when the mountains are covered in color and surrounded by that deep blue Maine coastline, I can’t imagine a prettier way to see it.
Charter a Private Boat — Cruise the Acadia coastline, Somes Sound, and surrounding harbors aboard a private boat for a more elevated way to see the area from the water.
