Fall dressing is really about the occasion for me. Where am I going? What does the day look like? Do I need to be comfortable enough to walk around all afternoon but polished enough to head straight to dinner? Those little details are usually where I start when I’m putting an outfit together.

So, for my latest Saks edit, I created ten looks for some of my favorite fall plans. Think lunch with a mountain view, coffee on a crisp morning, a beautiful office day, happy hour, an elevated brunch, dinner in the mountains, a fall party, an evening soirée, an afternoon at an art gallery, and a little shopping in between. Basically, the kind of calendar I would happily sign up for all season long.

The clothes are what make fall dressing so good. I love playing with chocolate brown, olive green, camel, burgundy and those little pops of red, then mixing in suede, leopard, plaid, denim and beautiful knits. Even a simple sweater and pair of jeans feels completely different when you add the right jacket, shoe, belt or handbag.

I also think fall is the perfect time to look at your closet and figure out what would make the pieces you already own feel exciting again. Maybe it’s a fabulous leopard jacket, a beautiful brown suede boot, an interesting belt or a handbag in a rich fall color. You don’t need an entirely new wardrobe — sometimes one really good piece changes everything.

These ten looks are really about making fall dressing feel fun again. Whether you’re headed somewhere special or simply want to feel a little more pulled together for the everyday, there’s plenty here to inspire your next outfit. Take the color combination, try the unexpected print, add the great jacket, or finally invest in the piece you know you’ll wear for years. Fall is too good a season not to enjoy getting dressed for it.
